Preserving and rebuilding the Fujifilm Frontier SP-2000 computer

This page documents the Windows NT computer used with an original Fujifilm Frontier SP-2000. The findings come from read-only forensic examination of the original disk image, registry, installed drivers, Fujifilm software, logs, service documentation, and physical hardware.

The goal is practical preservation: understand the original machine, preserve the parts that cannot easily be replaced, and determine what is required to build a replacement PC.

HOW TO READ THIS RESEARCH

CONFIRMED — Directly supported by the disk, registry, binary, manual, or physical hardware.

STRONG EVIDENCE — Supported by several independent observations.

OPEN QUESTION — Plausible, but awaiting a controlled hardware test.

CONFIRMED ORIGINAL CONFIGURATION

• Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Service Pack 5.

• Windows boots from the first, approximately 2 GB FAT partition.

• A second NTFS partition holds Fujifilm applications and data.

• Fujifilm A1 version 7.6 supports Standalone mode.

• A1 version 7.7 does not offer the same Standalone mode and continues looking for a printer/system connection.

• Intel PRO/100 PCI Ethernet using E100BNT.SYS 3.37.14.0001.

• Toshiba PCI Timer Card using tcard.sys 1.06.01.

• I-O DATA SCSI software using Symc8XX.sys and CtrlPCIC.sys.

• Toshiba Software Power Off V2.1 using Thal.sys and tspoffck.sys.

• Toshiba Extended Serial driver 1.06.00.

The exact Toshiba computer model is not yet proven. Earlier identification as an Equium 6200/6300 remains a working hypothesis.

THE TOSHIBA TIMER CARD

The timer card is a PCI device with a battery and a DB9 connection to the scanner. Its Windows NT driver identifies itself as Toshiba TIMER CARD Driver for PCI, version 1.06.01. It creates \Device\Tcard and \DosDevices\Tcard, reads RTC_PortBase configured as 0xA800, discovers and maps PCI resources, monitors the onboard battery, and registers for shutdown notifications.

The ED1055 service manual shows a Start SW signal entering the timer card. Together with the physical DB9 cable, this is strong evidence that the card can signal the scanner to start. The separate wires connected to the PC power button are likely used for scheduled PC power-on.

It is therefore plausible that a replacement PC could retain the timer card and scanner-start function without using the PC power-button wires. This has not yet been confirmed: the scanner has not been tested without the timer card connected.

SCSI ARCHITECTURE

The old page incorrectly identified the scanner interface as an Adaptec AHA-2940. Disk and registry evidence instead shows two relevant Symbios-family components:

1. symc810.sys, the Symbios 53C810 Windows NT miniport found in the original installation and Service Pack rollback material.

2. The I-O DATA Symc8XX.sys and CtrlPCIC.sys package. Registry and log evidence connects this driver to ScsiPort2 and the DIPP0 image-processing device opened by Fujifilm ImgLib.

The exact PCI card and its role must be matched by hardware ID and service configuration when building a replacement PC.

A1 SOFTWARE AND STANDALONE MODE

For a scanner-only installation, A1 7.6 is the known working choice because it contains Standalone mode. A1 7.7 uses a different printer/system-mode model and continues looking for a printer connection. This difference has been confirmed from the software menus and preserved installation.

The A1 installer alone is not sufficient to reproduce the original computer. The disk contains additional Toshiba, Intel, Symbios, I-O DATA, and Fujifilm components that must be preserved and evaluated separately.

REPLACEMENT-PC STATUS

A replacement PC appears technically possible, but it is not yet a proven drop-in rebuild.

1. Preserve and verify the complete original disk image.

2. Preserve and test the Toshiba timer card and DB9 scanner connection.

3. Use a motherboard compatible with the required 32-bit PCI cards and Windows NT 4.0.

4. Install Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 5.

5. Restore the verified non-Microsoft hardware drivers.

6. Install A1 7.6 and select Standalone mode.

7. Restore configuration only from documented, verified copies.

8. Test SCSI, DIPP0, timer-card battery status, scanner start, and image acquisition before retiring the original PC.

Separate SHA-256 and MD5 manifests will be provided so every download can be verified after transfer.

Compatibility warning: these are historical Windows NT 4.0 drivers. Match the exact hardware, operating-system service pack, and registry/service configuration before installation. Do not test them on the only working scanner PC.

SAFETY AND SCOPE

These files are provided for restoration, research, and preservation with Fujifilm publication permission. Keep verified backups and never experiment on the only working scanner computer.
